Family of Dead Inmate Sues Indiana Department of Correction in Suicide Case
The family of an inmate who struggled with mental illness for nearly 20 years before killing himself in a Pendleton prison has filed a lawsuit against the Indiana Department of Correction.According to The Indianapolis Star, the federal lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana on behalf of Archon “Shawnie” Garner.The complaint names as defendants the Indiana D.O.C., agency commissioner Rob Carter, and nine employees at Pendleton Correctional Facility.The Star notes that private medical contractor Wexford of Indiana, LLC, three of its doctors, and two other workers are listed as defendants.
