Federal Agency Has Recalled 28 Beverages So Far in 2024

In recent years, the number of food and beverages that have been recalled has been a significant concern for both consumers and regulatory agencies. These have spanned a wide range of products, from fresh produce and meats to packaged goods and beverages, often due to contamination including undeclared allergens or other harmful ingredients. So far 2024 has been no different when it comes to the vast number of consumable items being pulled from shelves. In fact, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled 28 beverages so far due to the presence of drugs, bacteria, or harmful chemicals that companies didn’t disclose on their packaging.Of the many that were recalled, one of the drinks is a Himalayan pain relief tea containing an undeclared anti-inflammatory medication. Another drink, Martinelli’s Apple Juice, was recalled because it contained arsenic, a toxin known to be linked to heart disease, neurological imbalances, and cancer.Around 1.9 million bottles of Fiji Water, made by Natural Waters of Viti Limited, were also taken off the shelves after three types of bacteria were found inside the bottles in addition to manganese, which, like arsenic, is a harmful metal. Ingested in high amounts, manganese can lead to a condition known as manganism, a neurological condition similar to Parkinson's disease. Most recently, the federal agency pulled four drinks produced by the Charles Boggini Company called Pink Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade X, and Cola Flavoring Base due to concerns over dyes linked to cancer risk, including Red 40 and Yellow 5. These dyes contain benzidine, a carcinogenic. Unlisted sulfites were also found in the flavoring which can cause allergic skin reactions, digestive imbalances, and asthma attacks.

A former FDA and USDA advisor and food safety expert at Northeastern University in Boston, Dr. Darin Detwiler, said that drinks are sometimes sold to the public before proper checks are done on them. This oversight can lead to significant health risks. He emphasized that inadequate testing and quality control measures are critical gaps that need to be addressed, pointing to increased pressure for rapid product turnover and market competition as common reasons companies cut corners when it comes to ensuring their products are safe. The full list of drinks that the Food and Drug Administration has recalled in 2024 to date include:Schweppes Zero Sugar GingeralePepsiCo’s Mug Root BeerMartinelli’s Apple JuiceNatural Waters of Viti Limited’s Fiji WaterCharles Boggini Company’s Cola Flavoring BaseCharles Boggini Company’s Pink LemonadeCharles Boggini Company’s Yellow LemonadeCharles Boggini Company’s Yellow Lemonade XThe Wiedemann Company’s Tapee TeaRise Brewing Organic Original Oat MilkRise Brewing Organic Vanilla Oat MilkNordic Naturals Baby’s Vitamin D3 LiquidBarsotti Organic Carrot JuiceTrader Joe’s 100% Juice Organic Carrot JuicePowerade Zero Mixed BerryPowerade Zero Fruit PunchPowerade Mountain Berry BlastWaiakea Hawaiin Volcanic WaterEnfamil Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula PowderHouse of Coffee Beans bagsLongreen Reishi CoffeeLongreen Cordyceps coffeeXlim Express CoffeeYogi Echinacea Immune Support TeaSammy’s Milk Goat Milk Toddler FormulaEnfamil Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula PowderCrecelac Powdered Goat Milk Infant FormulaMt.Capra Goat Milk Formula Recipe KitAt only halfway through the year, only time will tell how many others the FDA will deem unsafe.
