A recall has been issued for Primewell brand tires over concerns that the “sidewalls can crack and lose air, increasing the risk of a crash.” The recall was issued by Giti Tire USA, a California-based company that distributes the tires. So far the recall includes an estimated 394,000 Valera Touring II replacement passenger car tires that have been sold to a number of different Firestone stores.

According to company documents recently posted by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “a crack can develop in the lower sidewall after being in use for several months.” Fortunately, GITI claims “there has been no property damage or injury claims” connected to the cracks. However, it’s important for drivers to know that the cracks typically happen “on the opposite side of the tire from the serial number, which normally is mounted on the inside,” making it difficult to detect the crack until it’s too late.

So if it’s a difficult problem to detect, how was it discovered in the first place? Well, according to GITI, it was discovered through “continuous monitoring of market signals.” Additionally, the company says “219 tires have been inspected to date and there have been no reports of air pressure loss.”

But what tires, in particular, are being recalled? How can customers tell if their tires are included in the recall? For starters, all of the recalled tires were manufactured in Indonesia between April 1, 2015, and Dec. 31, 2016. The following tire sizes are included in the recall:

• 185/65R14 86H

• 195/60R15 88H

• 205/55R16 91H

• 205/60R16 92V

• 215/60R17 96H

• 235/60R17 102T
