In yet another setback for Jim Carrey after the suicide death of his former girlfriend, Cathriona White, the actor and comedian has been named in a second wrongful death lawsuit; this time, by White's mother Brigid Sweetman. The complaint was filed on Sweetman's behalf on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, and alleges Carrey knowingly gave White three sexually transmitted diseases, including an incurable case of genital Herpes, which led to her daughter's suicide wherein the young woman took a lethal dose of prescription drugs allegedly prescribed to the actor under the pseudonym "Arthur King." Carrey was previously named in a wrongful death suit by White's estranged husband Mark Burton in September of this year.In a statement released to the press regarding the lawsuit, White's mother said, "Jim Carrey should be ashamed of what he did to my daughter. And he should be ashamed for how he has used his Hollywood attorneys to badmouth Cat’s husband, Mark, with the hope that nobody will hold him responsible for what he did." White was found in her Los Angeles apartment, where she lived and worked as a make-up artist in Hollywood, by concerned friends after they hadn't heard from her. The county coroner deemed her death a suicide after finding a mix of drugs in her system, including Percocet, Propranolol and the sleep-inducing drug Ambien, none of which the 30-year-old had been professionally prescribed. Bottles found next to her bed had the name Arthur King on them, which was the supposed alias Mr. Carrey used to obtain the drugs. Carrey has stated the meds were stolen from him, and maintains he never supplied them to Ms. White on any occasion for any reason.

It has been reported White had a strained relationship with Sweetman over the years, having been forced to leave her home at the age of 15, and had remained estranged from her mother for several years. Though the two had recently reestablished contact through social media, White allegedly ceased all contact with her days prior to her suicide after a volatile conversation took place between the two. In response to this latest lawsuit, Martin D. Singer, who is serving as Carrey's attorney in the case, issued his own statement that read, "It is understandable that a mother who has lost a daughter will look for someone to blame. But in directing her grief and rage at Jim Carrey and joining this ridiculous lawyer's attempt to capitalize on Cathriona's suicide, Mrs. Sweetman is heading down the same dark path as Cathriona's green card ‘husband,’ Mark Burton."He further added, "On her 30th birthday, just a few days before her suicide, Cathriona White was distraught having received a message from her mother through Facebook that was so destructive and demoralizing that she instantly deleted her Facebook account so her mother could no longer contact her."It is unlikely Carrey will address this latest case publicly, as he's already spoken about Burton's lawsuit, declaring he was unwilling to settle in private for the sake of making it go away because he refused to be part of someone profiting off the death of another human being via a monetary shakedown. In the case of Burton, he had not seen, spoken to, or lived with White since their marriage and several of White's close friends and family members expressed they had no idea she was even married. Among the suicide notes White left behind, one was a plea for forgiveness over her intentional act. She ended said note by writing she was "just not for this world."How this latest suit will end remains to be seen, though the facts still show Carrey was not with White at the time of her death and therefore, did not force her to take the pills she had in her possession, regardless of how she obtained them, that led to her tragic death. The verity is: this young woman was in so much emotional pain, she saw no other way out and that should be of more concern to all involved than a cash settlement, as no amount of money can erase the sadness of the situation; that being the attention and help White so obviously and desperately needed.
