NU-9 May Slow Cell Deterioration in 'Lou Gehrig's' Disease
Northwestern University researchers have identified the first compound, NU-9, that eliminates the ongoing degeneration of brain neurons in the paralyzing disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It is also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease after a famous baseball player who suffered from ALS. Sporadic ALS occurs in 95% of people with the disease, meaning it can be present without a clear cause, while the other 5% is known as familial ALS (FALS), which has a genetic component.ALS is a neurodegenerative disease in which upper motor neurons degrade in victims to the point that those diagnosed lose essential motor function and eventually pass away from the disorder. Other motor neuron diseases, such as hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) and primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), follow a similar pattern. Thus far, there has been no drug or treatment for the brain component of ALS and these other conditions.
