Potential Listeria Contamination Prompts Latest Michigan Apple Recall

North Bay Produce announced earlier this month that it will begin voluntarily recalling many different types of Michigan apples over concerns they may be contaminated with listeria. According to the Michigan-based company, about “2,300 cases of fresh apples and two bulk bins that were distributed in eight states” are included in the recall.

The recalled apples include a host of popular varieties, including Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Fuji, Jonathan, Red Delicious, and Jonamac. According to the recall notice, the apples were sold and distributed in plastic bags under brand names like Great Lakes, Pure Michigan, and North Bay Produce. Additionally, they were sold in unbranded “clear plastic tote bags, white paper tote bags, and individually from retailers' display trays.” They were distributed to retailers, brokers, and wholesalers throughout Michigan, North Carolina, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Texas between October 16 and October 21.How was the issue discovered, though? What prompted the recall? For starters, the recall process began shortly after a “product test revealed that finished products contained the bacteria,” according to the press release. Fortunately, no other North Bay products are included in the recall. Additionally, there have been no reports of illnesses linked to the recall. For now, consumers who have the recalled apples in their homes should either toss them in the trash or return them for a refund.
